We’re all Different…We’re all the Same

I’m writing a story with the child about the things that make us different from each other. I’m hoping this will be a soft entry to explaining her challenges and her triumphs over them in a way that is positive and yet open and honest. We’ve already talked about how even the people in our family are unique. We’ve talked about many characteristics that can make people different – height, size, hair color, etc. Next up is explaining that some differences happen in our brains. We’ll see where it goes from there.

One thing I hope we can circle back to is that even with all of our differences, some things remain the same. Every person has value. Every person deserves respect. Every person needs safety and love. Every person has feelings…

While we recognize the differences, we need to emphasize the similarities as well because the similarities will be what help us stand up for ourselves and others. Recognizing what makes us the same helps us live together – and thrive. The differences just keep things interesting.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this little project of ours…
