Using Technology Creatively

We as teachers are always looking for interesting ways of using technology to enrich the lives of our children with special needs. WIth the internet explosion it is sometimes difficult to wade through the good sites to find something that we can use to enhance their ability to progress in any area. Well, I’m always in searc of ways to use internet sites for good.

I found a great site that either serve as a freebie or something that you can create and purchase. This is the coolest thing…..check out Tikatok. It is a site you can use to create a book. I used it to create a Social story about staring Kindergarten.

I used my niece to create the following Social Story. Yes, it is a little cheesy but I was able to create the story in about 10 minutes. Click on the cover to open the book and begin reading. You can also read it as a full screen document.

The way we, in the classroom, would use this site would be to create social stories to share with the entire group – using an LCD projector and project it to a large screen. You can create these books with your child at home to teach several different things:

  • Social Skills
  • Adaptive Skills (getting dressed, bedtime routine, going to school, going to the dentist, etc.)
  • How to make Friends

It is very easy to use. If you choose, you can then order them from the site in soft or hard cover and the one thing you can not do is print them out yourself, which is a bummer.

But WOW…..what a great way to use technology creatively with your child. Wouldn’t they just love seeing themselves in an online book that also teaches a wonderful skill? What more could you ask for?

Check it out.
