Unique In Many Ways

Don Johnson had his signature tee-shirt and blazer. Katherine Hepburn had her signature pleated, menswear-looking slacks. The Cat In The Hat, PeeWee Herman and Winston Churchill all have their signature bow ties.

And my Ashley has her signature Chucks!

And here is what she wanted for her birthday – more Chucks, of course!

Often our children have a special ‘lovey’ like a tattered blanket that goes everywhere with them or a certain hat that must be worn no matter what the weather. To me, it’s something that makes our children unique – something other than their disability.

And, it helps form a bond with their non-disabled peers. You know, like the ‘skater boy’ who always wears skulls on his shoes and shirts – or like the Goth girl dressed all in black and wearing black nail polish.

All children, regardless of their level of ability seek out those things which make them feel special. Unfortunately, my Ashley has taken that to shoe extreme!

So, what signature items do your children have?
