Do you give your kids chores?

I’d honestly never thought about giving Max chores, until a recent conversation on an e-loop I belong to for moms of kids with cerebral palsy.

One mom whose son is able to crawl on the floor lets him help sort laundry and put his toys away. She was planning to have him help her maintain the garden this summer with a watering can. Another mom asks her son to help clear the dinner table.

The second I read this, it occurred to me that we pretty much do everything for Max. True, he has a lot of challenges using his hands, but he’s capable of holding a broom, of putting laundry into a basket, of any number of things.

I do that all the time: forget to treat Max like a typical kid. Because of all that he’s been through, I tend to over-coddle him. Because of his challenges, I tend to over-do things for him. Yet like any child, he needs to learn responsibility.
