Preparing to be Thankful

Thanksgiving will be different for me this year. For several years running it has not been my favorite holiday. It was stressful for many reasons…not that I haven’t had my reasons to be thankful, but somehow they seemed shabby in comparison to what I had expected. This year I have determined to just be thankful, even in the smallest details. Here’s my list…what are you thankful for?

  • I am thankful for play dates at someone else’s house that go really well with minimal supports.
  • I am thankful that our family has finally realized that setting off on our road trip at two o’clock in the afternoon, planning to eat fast food for dinner, and expecting that the kids will sleep in the car for a little while is far less stressful than trying to get out the door by nine o’clock in the morning and being crabby with each other the rest of the day.
  • I am thankful for family near enough to visit and for family farther away to think warm thoughts of.
  • I am thankful for my own improving health and the ways I am learning to take care of myself.
  • I am thankful for an amazingly easy transition for my daughter in her new school, and for a wonderful teacher who has been incredibly helpful and understanding.
  • I am thankful for the emerging curiosity and imagination I see developing in my twins, even when it makes life a little messier than I might choose.
  • I am thankful for a husband who most often chooses to be understanding and encouraging and thankful for me in return.
  • I am thankful for friends who support, question, challenge and inspire me – especially those who listen when I am at the end of my rope and help me find a way up.
  • I am thankful for the opportunity to share with you here, and I wish you and yours a very thankful season.
