One-on-one

Precious has been getting one-on-one therapy since she was very young. She’s has a lot of attention focused on her over the last 5 1/2 years. She went to a special needs’  preschool for two years where there were 4 children with two teachers. The next year, she went to a private kindergarten with one teacher for every 8 students.

When DH’s aunt came to visit a few weeks ago, she gave Precious a lot of attention and it was great for Precious. Precious learned a lot and got lots of books read to her, and even got an art lesson. Aunt Nora taught Precious a rhyme and taught her the storyline of a few books, and these are sticking in Precious’ head.

After Aunt Nora left, Precious collected all the special books that she had been read, and she put them on her dresser and she ‘reads’ them to the rest of the family..

Precious thrives on a lot of attention, but I have often wondered if this is because of her special needs or because she has gotten used to lots of attention. It’s a bit of a chicken and an egg thing. What do you think? Do you think that kids that have always got a lot of attention will always need a lot of attention or do kids with special needs just naturally need more attention?
