Cowboy and Wills:A Remarkable Little Boy and the Puppy That Changes His Life

I’m going to start a little 5 minutes for special needs summer book club today, and I hope you’ll join me.

I am reading a book right now that is OUR kind of book.

Cowboy and Wills

Cowboy and Wills: A Remarkable Little Boy and the Puppy That Changes His Life by Monica Holloway has just been released in paperback.

There is a lot of talk these days about the benefit of animals in the lives of children with special needs. When you are the parent of a child with autism, introducing a puppy to the family, even if it is a trained service dog, can be dicey. We have just acquired a new black lab puppy that flew all the way from San Francisco to Boston to be a service dog for a little boy with autism. (He was just 8 weeks old!) When it became clear after just a few days that the boy was way overstimulated by the puppy (his name is Buddy, when you read Cowboy and Wills you will see how ironic it is that we have a puppy named Buddy ), he was flown back to the breeder and now he is ours. We love him. Matthew even loves him, “because beautiful girls come and talk with me when I’m with him.” We’d introduce the phrase “chick magnet” but that would only confuse.

What I am LOVING about Cowboy and Wills is the way Cowboy (a golden retriever puppy) came into Wills’ life and how he transformed him. I’m not going to give anything else way.

I also love the way Monica Holloway writes. It’s like she is sitting on my living room couch and telling me her story.

I’m still reading… I encourage you to read too. Get a box of tissue. Prepare for goosebumps. We’ll talk about it the Friday after next (that gives you a chance to order the book or get it at the library. It’s just a little over $10.00 on Amazon.)

Monica has a facebook page for the book – kinda fun. Check it out!
