I am a stay-at-home mom of 2 girls. My younger daughter has cerebral palsy with developmental delay and my older daughter has ADHD with sensory dysfunctions. My story of going from the work force to home is published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Power Moms. When I am not driving to and from schools, therapies and changing diapers, I am a web site designer and social media geek.

lists for everything

I am a list maker by nature. Lists of doctors, lists of what I need to make for Thanksgiving dinner, I don’t dare go into the grocery store unarmed or I’ll come home with $200 worth of nothing that makes 2 weeks of meals. Now I have to teach my daughter how to do that…

We are thankful

I have been dealing with a sick little girl since Thursday. I have a very clever post about trips to the emergency room, but my brain is fried from waking up every four hours to dose tylenol. Instead,  in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I asked my kids what they are thankful for. Fluffy is seven and…

I’ll teach my girl 100 words

Bear’s IEP went off without a hitch. I am very thankful for the wonderful team supporting my daughter. It was comical to see eight adults sitting in kiddie chairs around a tiny table flipping through 32 pages of goals. It was the shortest one so far. We were done in less than an hour! We…

Of PPOs, DME and AFOs

Looks like we’ll be changing insurances this open season. Three years of hand and foot orthotics have brought us to Bear’s lifetime maximum benefits for durable medical equipment. I hate that they are not covered separately. There is not cap for therapy because she’s under 6, why is there a cap for her therapeutic needs? It’s so frustrating because we really like this insurance company….

gearing up for our third IEP

Bear has a fall birthday, so we get to do her IEP in a couple of weeks. This is the third review of the current plan. She is in her third year of preschool. It works well. Our goal meetings take hours. We have four specialists and at least 25 pages to cover. I am…

5 years later

Bear will be five this weekend. Five years that have aged me at least fifteen. We knew it would be a struggle from the day she was born. When we took her home to a “don’t expect much” prognosis. Five surgeries, handfuls of MRIs, CTs, genetic tests and innumerable hours of therapy later, she is…

No H1N1 vaccine for us, thanks

A few weeks back my mom asked if I was going to get the “swine flu shot” for Bear. My answer: “NO!” She looked at me like I am nuts (a look I get from her and others all.the.time.) and I proceeded to ramble off my reasons for choosing to not get this new vaccine….

it will never all make sense

That’s my mantra. My concrete brain wants to connect all the dots to my daughters. I have a control-freak hiding deep inside that whispers, if you know why, then you’ll know how to make her all better. Then I open the fridge to make breakfast and see this: My kids don’t make any more sense…

Now both of my kids are in OT

Having two kids means four times more work than one. When both kids are in therapy, everything is four times harder than that. We started the two-in-occupational-therapy schedule when school got out. It looked to be a short-term thing, she just needed help with her handwriting. That was wishful thinking sprinkled with a dash of…
